The cymbidium pot in water?
 

I purchased my first one last weekend, Cym. Eleanor Matsumoto. The vendor said to leave the pot standing in a few inches of water. That’s right? Thanks

I think it's best to have it moist than wet, in the case you may want to let it out of the water tray. Water when the substrate approaches to the dry side.

What is the potting medium?

I think that the grower is trying to recommend a way to keep the roots cool, as such a hybrid is probably a bit "cool blooded" for New Orleans climate.

I highly recommend you repot it into semi-hydroponics in an unglazed clay pot, sitting in the tray of water.

Ray, I just purchased it last week and it’s in full bloom. Should I repot now? The vendor said it was good to go for a year or so. It is currently in a plastic pot. A clay pot in water does sound like a better idea to me.

The vendor I purchased my C. Eleanor Matsumoto from mentioned something similar, but I didn't ask a lot of details.

I think it was in the context of plants that are in tall cymbidium pots and in chunky mixes. If your C. Eleanor Matsumoto came from the same source as mine and is in promix (looks like potting soil), then I can say I haven't been keeping mine sitting in water and probably wouldn't do it unless/until I repot into a larger pot with a different potting mix.

I would recommend holding off on repotting until the plant is done blooming and has new growths forming that are just starting to develop new roots. That'll give it the best chances of adapting to new potting media.

Also, after your plant is done blooming, keep an eye on it. Apparently these are capable of producing multiple spikes from a single bulb. I'm probably jinxing it, but mine is developing a new spike from the bulb that was in spike when I bought it.

It does look like promix. These guys love water, correct? Should I keep it damp? Good chance it is the same vendor. I purchased it at a show. I purchased another one from another vendor and she said nothing about setting the pot in water. Yet, some of my responses here mentioned leaving the pot in the runoff from watering.

Notice if using a clay pot with bark, you can keep it moister while air still gets to the roots. That's how I do it.

2) As it's in ProMix, be wary of saturating the medium and suffocating the roots.

I agree with Ray on this even though we live in different climatic areas. Cyms like to stay moist, but if in a standard mix never like to sit in water 24/7. They need good drainage and whatever mix you use should give them that.

Wait to repot as MrHappyRotter suggested and meanwhile, learn everything you can about Cyms, their care and how to repot properly. Good Luck, :waving
