Vanilla orchid question
 

Hey everyone,
First time posting. I bought a phalaenopsis last spring and then had another broght home because we didnt want someone jusy throwing itnaway soon after. They have been doing great and were a good intro to orchids. I then bought a vanilla orchid cutting this summer and it has done a good job rooting itself. Its survived being blown over by high winds a couple times luckily, and now resides inside in a south facing frosted window for now. My question is that the other day, I noticed shoots growing out from the nodes of two leaves. I am not sure if they are vegatative shoots or flower shoots. I was wondering if someone was able to help identify them for me. I will post some pics. Any help is appreciated!

Most likely more vines...everything I've ever heard and read states Vanilla won't bloom until it's at least 10 feet, minimum.

One of them looks like an aerial root, the other looks like the plant may be forming a branch, which is the vanilla equivalent of a keiki I guess.

Vanillas are vines that, for the most part, won't flower until they have grown as high up as possible, then start back down... Can limiting the mount it grows on force that issue? I have no idea.

I'm with Mr. Happy on that - a root and a vine. If you got a "section", as opposed to an "end cutting", that's even more likely. Either way, it's a good sign.

Thanks for the replies. It was originally an end cutting but all it didnt grow for the entire summer and then the top leaves turned brown and died. I assumed the plant was dying but the rest of the plant stayed healthy and now there is finally new growth.

Grow this one for the fun of watching it grow. Since it does need to be warm, it isn't going to be able to get enough room to get to blooming size in the house (assuming that you still want to live there)and you can't put it outside unless you live in Hawaii, But it's an attractive plant, enjoy.

I was wondering, do you grow it in just bark indoors? I have one growing indoors but the medium does not seem to be all that great, wondering if I should switch to bark since yours seem to be doing good.

I bought orchid mix at lowes and planted it in there and put the pot in a frosted window that doesnt let sun directly through. Seems to like it there.
