My Bulbophyllums are not blooming

Hello everyone,

I am Elvis, a beginner in planting orchids from Hong Kong.
The orchids I have are mostly Bulbophyllum and they are mounted. Some of them are mounted for at least 6 months and they are doing well. There are so many new buds and leaves coming out; however, they never bloomed through the whole summer.

I plant them on my balcony under a curtain, so that there are no direct sunlight. Water once everyday, sometime twice. Liquid orchid fertilizer is used once a week. The weather here is always hot and humid in Hong Kong.

I want to know if I am planting them correctly, thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

They look pretty good to me. Maybe it's simply a matter of them getting established and "comfortable" before they're ready to bloom. Sometimes an adjustment period is necessary.

What is the formula of your liquid fertilizer, and at what concentration do you mix it?

I use this fertilizer by following its instructions, add 5ml per 1 Litre in my spray bottle and spray them to my plants once a week. It says that it contains a solution of NPK nutrients in a ratio of 5-6-7.

I saw some websites said that bulbophyllum will not bloom if sunlight is not enough, so I was thinking if the place I am hanging the orchids is too dark for them. But the sunlight here in Hong Kong is way too strong for them in summer.

There is also a temperature change that is needed before the bigger colonies bloom. Your smaller ones may take a year or two more before they bloom.

Thanks for telling me that, maybe I should be more patient.

From what I know, most bulbos like to bloom when it's a certain month/season, so you might just have to wait for the correct month/season in your area.
