Phal gigantea

Hi!
I have had a phlas gigantea growing in a pot for a few years and has not been doing too well. I have decided to mount it. Need to know if oak wood is ok to mount on? And if I cannot water it daily what way is the best.
Thanks

I recently got two seedlings of this species, currently in basket with sphagnum. Hope I could bring them up :)

Phal. gigantea likes it REALLY warm, and with plenty of moisture, while maintaining plenty of air around the roots.

If you cannot water it at least once a day, mounting is probably not a good idea for your environment and watering capabilities.

Instead, consider a slat basket of sphagnum, suspended sideways to facilitate the plant's pendant growth habit.

Agreed with Ray! They reall love warm conditions. We have really hot summer so she is in filltered sun at 39 C which is really a hudge temperature, but as long she is watered heavily and enjoy much air movement she is doing really well. In my care she is in orchiata bark which allow me to water me more often and abundant. :)

this is a balancing act plant.

first, oak is safe but, as said that is not necessarily the best plan depending on the environment and your cultural habits.

I have this one mounted on a piece of scrap pine 1x2 upside down, i water it daily-ish.

While i am not intimately familiar with all of Canada, i do recall that none of it is sub tropical so, you have to find another approach. I think ray's suggestion is great. If you search for "wet mount" you'll find some stuff i made for a bulbo recently that might also suit this, grown upside down.

the basket or raft with a wet medium is also good, sphag, coir or even rockwool in some combination. use coir or hygrolon to wrap the roots onto the wood and hold in a pocket of sphag or rockwool.
