Where do you get pots without holes for semi-hydro?
 

I want to try semi-hydro. I can't find any containers locally that are without holes for semi-hydro. I see some people using plastic flower pots but they don't have holes! I have no idea where they find these. I ordered some 32oz deli containers from Amazon that I will start with but they're quite small and I have several orchids that I'd like to put in the system that would need a pot 2 or 3x that size. Anyone know where I could get what I need?

ANY plastic container will do. Besides Amazon.com, try webrestaurantstore.com, and then cruise the aisles at dollar stores, Walmart, Bed, Bath & Beyond, etc.

Before I started buying containers wholesale (large dollar purchase required) and having them converted, I have used food containers, small trash cans, even foam coolers. Now that I'm no longer doing that, I am back to those same old tactics.

I have rummaged through the grocery store looking for "quart" sized or larger without writing on them. In the disposeable (and non-disposeable) refrigerator or freeser container aisle, there may be some you can use. If you don't mind writing on them (if they are in a chashe pot), you could try the paint department of a hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot) to see the sizes of the little paint mixing buckets there (they are usually clear with writing on them). I have also used Mayonnaise jars and any kind of plastic jar or container made of nice thick clear plastic. I have a dremmel tool, and just cut the "coller" off which has the screw threads for the top, and then punch a few holes at an equal height, for the lower water release holes.

I'm partial to glass containers. I just drill holes where I need them.

do you like chinese soups? I have found those quart size containers to be just right/ Get a soldering iron and melt a hole (quarter inch tip on iron is fine) 1 inch up from bottom at least 3 places around container.
Or you can ask your favorite chinese food take out place to sell you a few... I had one such place order me a box of 500 pots

I go to junk/flea/thrift store type places for glass containers, then drill holes with a diamond bit as Subrosa says.

Same thing for plastic. I just got a package of five semi-transparent food containers 10x5 at the local WallyWorld to repot some larger orchids. Cost about $1 each. Drill hole, or burn with soldering iron.

And I'm rather irritated at Ray right now for suggesting the web restaurant store wholesale site. It caused me an order I hadn't planned on making. :rofl:;)

I purchase plastic pots at the Dollar General for $1. No holes in bottom unless you poke holes thru.

Here is an easy way to use typical orchid pots with bottom holes for S/H.. .

Just place a plastic cap of peanut butter bottle or a yogurt cup into those orchid pots. And Voilà! :bowing You have a perfect pot with a water reservoir for S/H.. . Best of all, the pot still has the holes for air circulation.

Tip: If the bottom of the pot is not flat, just add a layer of pebbles till it's about flat.

You actually DON'T want the extra holes for air circulation.

Extra air circulation allows the water to evaporate faster, which defeats the wicking.

I order deli quart containers at Amazon and drill two holes for semi hydro. They do not have any markings and sturdy.
