Should I cut this off?
 

Hi everyone,
When I got this Iwanagara Apple Blossom the newest pseudobulb looked weird, really tiny compared to the previous bulb and with only one leaf fully grown.

I potted it (it came bare root) and placed it in a sunny window where it is receiving a little over 1 hour of direct morning sun and bright shade for the rest of the day.

The orchid seems fine, except for this bulb which now has this weird brown spot and its leaf turned very purple, as if it was receiving tons of sunlight.

Does this look like sunburn to you? I was thinking maybe the orchid was in a very dark spot for a while, which would explain why the bulb is so small and so sensitive to light. I forgot to mention all the other leaves are just fine, no signs of purple.

..Or maybe it is some sort of infection and I should cut this off?

If the brown area is soft, it might be a fungal or bacterial rot. I would cut the whole pseudobulb all the way down to the rhizome. If there is any brown or black in the rhizome, I would sanitize the blade with 10% bleach solution and cut off another pseudobulb. Keep cutting until there is neither brown nor black. This is a vigorous plant that should recover quickly, so it is better to take off the whole thing. if rot is suspected.

If the brown area is firm, I would watch it. This may be sunburn. If it does not spread, continue watching the plant carefully.

before amputation, I would peel back that thin covering, called the sarong, and see what the actual psuedobulb looks like....

it looks like mechanical damage from shipping....so if you wait a bit to see, you might be able to save that bloom sheath....

peel the sarong back gently, and spray with some physan, then wait and see

I feel stupid not having tried this before. I peeled it back and the bulb looks perfectly healthy. Thank you so much!
