alba and semi alba

we came across many plants have the name extensions like "var alba", "var sem- alba" . what these name indicated?

Ray 07-09-2017 08:49 AM

Alba refers to a plant lacking in coloring pigments, meaning it will be white and/or green in a plant in which the type species has color.

Semi-alba is used to refer to a flower mostly meeting those same criteria, but the lip still is colored.

Thanks for the answer. we really confused what this name indicates and now we are clear about this.

can you help us similar extensions like "var Aquinii" and " var coerulea "

Ray 07-11-2017 09:44 AM

If I. Am remembering correctly, aquinii means there is collation in the petals mimicking that of the lip. It is also referred-to as "flared".

Coerulea refers to bluish tones.

I will add to Ray's definition of alba in including yellow in the alba colors. The anthrocyanin missing in all these alba varieties is red.

Hi,

I am curious.. Can the traits of var. alba, purpurata, and etc. be passed on to the next generation of seedlings or in creating hybrids?

Yes, they can be, but may not be.

I'm no geneticist nor experienced breeder, but a lot depends upon whether particular genes are dominant or recessive.

I "think" alba, for example, is recessive, and on occasion, an alba x alba cross will yield pigmented offspring.
