Oncidium ampliatum replacement

I have this large Oncidium ampliatum. I guess it's 4 PBs. It now has a 3 ft spike and frankly, it is taking up way too much room. I love the Dancing Lady flowers though. I know there are lots of smaller Oncidiums with similar flowers (and different names, Oncidea?). Do you have any suggestions for a replacment?

Does the plant know you're going to replace it? Do you know what that's going to do to it's sense of self-esteem? Shame on you.

I suggest replacing it with a Phalaenopsis sanderiana. You know that you want to.

Gomesa crispa
Oncidium cebolleta
Tolumnia species

Or you could just cut off the %&* flower spike and enjoy the tightly-packed green pseudobulbs.

I know this will be a foreign idea but, I already have one. I'd like something similar to the aforementioned plant.

You two are incorrigible. BTW, ES, I'm sure you know that oncidium is psychodelic? (sp)

I was thinking in the Sweet Sugar catagory. There are lots of hybrids in there and I wonder if anyone had a favorite.

It is said to be psychedelic by unnamed sources all over the Internet. People also say smoking dried banana peels will get you high.

People grow all sorts of decorative plants with substantial mental effects. I don't think many gardeners will eat their beautiful plants to get high, when they can go to the convenience mart and get a quart of malt liquor in a paper bag to drink on the ride home.

haha, It didn't even occur to me that people bought plants to get high until I searched amazon for some morning glory seeds... took a second to understand why so many people bought a 5000 pack... I was actually trying to grow them, mind you.

I apologize for not having anything pertinent to your original question - I only know Onc. twinkle!

I actually know people who have eaten morning glory (Ipomoea) seeds to get high, back in the 1970s. It sounded awful. (I have never done so. I get high on life.)

According to my friends, they chewed 25-100 of the seeds, holding them in their mouths as long as possible. The taste is bitter, like chewing aspirin. Everybody soon became very nauseated, and vomited profusely. Then the hallucinations began. They said they would not go out of their way to do it again.

Wait a minute. Really, this is serious. There is an orchid that's psychoactive? Research time....

Seriously, Carol, you know what I'll put in an open space. But you must have gotten that plant for a reason. Sometimes adorable, sweet puppies grow into very big dogs.

I apologize for this thread taking a wrong turn. I also apologize if I offended anyone. And I apologize for my auto correct, which makes me look illiterate. Now the question at hand: Is there something in the Oncideum tribe that looks like Ampliatum but us much more manageable. Surely one of you must be growing a superior one.

estación seca 05-20-2017 03:38 PM

I wasn't joking. Look at these much smaller plants:
Gomesa crispa
Oncidium cebolleta
Tolumnia species
