Potted Tolumnias
 

I have a tolumnia in a net pot right now that is well... doing ok? :goodluck: It is putting out three new growths and tolerating the fact that I do not get around to watering it every day as I should. I am very tempted to find a way to pot it as I would find this less of a pain to water on a regular basis. Has anyone had good success with this? If so, what media/potting set up worked or didn't work and why? Love these little plants so much, very tempted to get a few more in the future if I can grow them potted! :cheer:

They can be tricky potted. In habitat they get rain or dew every night, then dry out by noon. They may get rain during the day, and then they dry quickly. If they stay wet for a prolonged time they rot. If they don't get enough water they dry up.

They also need very bright light, especially as far north as you are. In habitat different species grow on twigs in full sun where there is a good breeze all day long, or under other shrubs where there is very bright light but not enough to cook them.

Many people who can't water them every day set up an automatic mist system to spray them once a day, often in the early morning, so they are dry by nightfall.

Honestly, if you have them potted in something like small or medium bark, you're almost better off not watering every day, especially if you don't have strong artificial or natural light to put them under. Their roots really need to dry quickly, so you're better off under watering than over watering.

I agree with the Blaze. I should have been more clear in my third paragraph above; I was referring to daily watering of mounted plants. My tolumnias are mounted and not in pots.
