Cattleya trianaei 'Cashens' prices.
 

Hello all! I have a rather large plant of this beauty it's in an 8 inch pot with 7 leads, it's overflowing and I plan to divide and sell. When I received the plant I paid 75$ and I was surprised to get it so cheap considering its size. Same size pot with 5 leads just a few month before the bloom season. It was poised to put on a great show. I've seen smaller plants go for a lot more!!! Like 500$ on eBay. How much would you pay? And why does it fetch such a price? What should I expect to sell for?

Also I wasn't sure where to post this but figured this was safe since it's About a Cattleya.

Cattleya trianeai 'Cashens' is thought to be about the very best lavendar trianeai. It is known to be a tetraploid. The plant is very uncommon in collections.

I would be very concerned about being able to prove the identity of the plant through acknowledged expert growers/breeders. For example, I know that Orchids Limited has a plant, which Jerry Fischer has carefully tracked to the original plant. Orchids Limited has crossed this plant with itself and the plants from that crossing have been blooming and sold. Standard unbloomed plants from the cross, like I have, are $300. Some have bloomed and been fantastic and have sold for much more than this.

What do I get for the $300 - certainty about the parentage AND certainty about the condition of the plant, most particularly the roots. To sell your division for very much money you would need to have much more documentation of this being a true 'Cashens' and some way to document the condition of the plant, including the roots.

Unfortunately, as with other antiques and collectibles, classic and famous orchids have been sold but not always have they been the real thing.

Makes perfect sense! So how would I go about verifying my plant? Now I am curious. I have a pic of the bloom from last year Attachment 122248Attachment 122249 not sure if these photos will help. The plant is very healthy and expect the divisions to be also. The roots are excellent. I would like to know if I really have something special or not. Either way it's beautiful to me.
If my plant is not or I cannot confirm. I would not want to deceive anyone looking to purchase and would mention in the listing that it's unconfirmed. Set it up as an auction and let people pay what they will with the given information.

The plant at the back of the pot indicates that it was also started as a division not that that means anything haha.

While I have no idea on the authenticity, I must say that it is absolutely beautiful!

Pictures alone are tough because they don't get at size, substance, and other factors. Your picture certainly resembles the few other online pictures of 'Cashen's' from acknowledged expert growers/breeders. Go to Orchids Limited and Keith Davis websites and search 'Cashens'. They each have good pictures. I think it is almost impossible for you to verify that you have 'Cashen's . You won't go through the genetic testing to show that yours is a tetraploid, either. You are right - you just tell it like it us and get what you get.

I think most of us have a hybrid or species that we think is a particular named clone and yet we might only have something that looks like it. Even when no one is trying to misrepresent something, labels get misplaced or lost and someone down the line assumes something and makes a new label. Maybe it is right, maybe it isn't.

I'm with Leafmite, don't know a thing but it is really pretty.

I can see why this plant is called Cash-ens. Wow that's a lot of money some people pay. I googled it, and found a self cross here in Europe that is selling for €35 or about $50. If you can't afford the real McCoy then I guess this is as close as you can get.

There are many excellent clones of trianaei that are as good as 'Cashens', or better. Just because someone received an FCC for it doesn't mean its THE best.

The flowers definitely look like 'Cashens', similar to my division which I got from Steven Kristoffersen in California, a well known Cattleya collection who can trace his plants to the source. What I find with this cultivar you and I have, unlike the other awarded trianaes that I have, is that it is rounder flatter shaped petals, with five point flaring, round lip with ring orlata rims, and a deep yellow throat. Other trianaes have one or two of these traits but not all in one. Your flowers certainly has these traits. If I was to see this I would say it is the 'Cashens' in a judging center.

However, you can always ask your seller regarding the provenance and they may have an answer.

If you were to sell it with provenance, a fair price for 3 bulb division is $250. If without the confirmed identity, it can go for $150.

But in my opinion, get this plant to an orchid show or AOS judging and perhaps some cattleya experts can confirmed this with you. If it's not 'Cashens', you might get an AOS award because the flowers are such high quality!

What an excellent idea!!!! How do i find a Judging location near me or a show for that matter.
Should i wait to divide the plant until i can get it there? show it as a specimen or will a division be fine? Either way I need to repot it, Whole or divided, as you can see its crawling out of the pot.

I will try getting in touch with the seller and see if they know anything. And Ive bought from Steven Before! His plants are Amazing!! I would like to make money when i sell the divisions so if i could prove anything with the AOS and make more that would be great! I see at least 6 or 7 divisions can be made from this plant I want to keep a 2 lead division for myself. There is an excellent piece that will be a 2 lead division when i divide it that i have chosen for myself!:biggrin::biggrin:
