What to do with a Phal that seems stagnant
I have a small Phal that bloomed once 4 years ago. Since then it has done nothing. My other Phals bloom once a year regularly. Any suggestions what the problem is and what to do about it?

Hello! First! I'm new... Wait for others advice lol
Okay! On the experience I had with Phalaenopsis that didn't bloom, was lack of nutrients or bad media. Did you repot the orchid and put it on a new fresh airy media recently? I also read tons and read blooming is affected by light and temperature, another member mentioned that recently to me too, but I have a really bad memory, hopefully someone can provide you more information but I would look at this points once you check for sure that the whole plant is healthy, then it might be the temperature or the media it is in. Good luck! :) |
As mentioned, how are the roots and what condition is it in? If roots are good in good media and it is healthy, then it likely needs a few weeks of cooler temps in the fall. that will usually trigger blooming for them.

This is speculation. There is a group of species, most recently considered in genus Phalaenopsis, that were formerly classified in genus Doritis. Doritis were known for tolerating much lower temperatures than classic Phalaenopsis species. I wonder whether hybrids with substantial Doritis heritage bloom better with more cooling than usual for hybrids with more traditional Phalaenopsis heritage?

The roots seem unusually thin to me and maybe a bit woody. Right now I have it potted in a small size bark mix in the lower half of the pot and sphagnum moss in the top half of the pot. I've tried all medium bark and also larger bark pottings, but nothing seems to stimulate growth with this Phal. I have four other Phals that are doing great, so this one has me perplexed.

I'm having the same problem. I recently moved it to where the other phals bloomed to see if that helps.
