Oncidium-Too soon to repot?
Hello, my friends
My oncidium has a new pbulb growing. It is now 1 cm long. I don't if there are new roots. My intuition says maybe it's too soon, maybe wait a little longer. What do you think? http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psrz9gehgh.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...pst5xajf87.jpg |
My oncidiums never seemed to mind being repotted whenever, at least I never noticed a problem. So do it when you feel ready.

Looks like it's being pinched by the edge of the pot. Repotting now would give it room to grow.

Remeber if you have new growth you have new roots. If you have new roots that is the best time to repot. I myself am doing a lot of repotting this spring.

I decided to wait a little longer. This plant has two flower stems in two different pbulbs so I'm not sure if I have one or two plants in the same pot.
Also, I'm not sure but it seems something is starting to grow in the second pbuld that has flowers. See for yourself: http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...pswkg2ub2o.jpg |
New growth like that little new bulb in the first photo is a good reason to re-pot. If nothing else, pop it out of its pot and put it in a larger pot and back fill with some bark. (I like potting like this if the media does not look bad).

I think now it's a good time to repot this plant.
Two new pbs growing and a lot of new roots growing out of the pot. Thus is the first time I repot an oncidium. Any special care to consider? http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psatwda8jc.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psnaljngjx.jpg http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psu8sdub8t.jpg |
They don't even notice repotting, so go ahead.

Done!
Now it looks happier.:) Trimmed all the dead leaves and dead flowers spikes. I haven't found any rotten roots, all were white and rigid. There was a dying pbulb burried in the media but it as been always there. Since the plant seems to be happy I didn't removed it. Hopefully it will become a source for nutrients, like in nature. As media I've used 2/3 medium size bark mixed with 1/3 of a mix suitable for epiphytes containing bark, perlite, leca and coconut husks. This was still in the original pot when I bought it and the media was bark with traces of moss.
