Dendrobium Phalaenopsis
Hello everyone; I have problems with my Den Phals bud blasting. I have made sure they are not in any kind of draft.... no fluctuating temperature changes..... I water them the same all the time, but when they put our a spike, it all goes well until the buds start to develop past the mitten look and then from the bottom they keep blasting one by one up the stem. I had 3 flower spikes on one and out of the three spikes I managed 3 flowers. I don't understand why???? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you... |
I have the same problem, at least on one of my two plants. The other is doing OK at the moment.
I'm not much help but it seems if I move it at all, then they blast. Are you keeping it in a fairly warm place? I think mine is kept a bit cooler than they like. They are warm growers. So I have moved mine to a heat mat for the winter since it is cool in the greenhouse, But I just had a spike and lost 3 or 4 of the 7 buds to blasting. Hopefully someone will give you (and me) some tips. |
Some of the Phal-type Dens are fussy about being moved. For many years, I had one that, every time I moved it inside for the winter or outside for the summer, it would drop a few bottom leaves. It did not like drastic temperature or light changes. I have had others that haven't been fussy at all. No idea.

Den Phal Bud Blast
I had it in a west facing window that has a light diffuser on it (the stick on kind that lowers the intensity of the sun) and it was doing wonderful but there is a heat register above it and I was afraid that if I left it there the buds would blast, so I moved it only about 3 feet from the window where no heat would be blowing on it. Shortly after that I noticed the buds starting to blast.
I guess maybe I should not have moved it. I was always told a change in temperature can cause bud blasting, which is why the heat register worried me. Thank you for helping... |

Could the register blast still be getting it and actually be the cause? Or is it too cool by the window now? |
Hopefully, it will soon start a new spike or two for you.

I have D. Burana Stripe and D. Kiyoshi Izumi x Jacquelyn Concert that were shipped in spike from Hawaii to Phoenix in October. They went into my sunroom, where daytime temperatures gradually decreased from above 100 F then to about 75 F now, and there was no bud loss. So it may be that some hybrids are much more touchy.

Den Phal
Thank you for all the input...
This particular Den Phal that blasted most of its buds is a NOID.... the one right beside it, I believe to be Polar Ice, which only lost one minute bud and they are side by side in the same light, the same conditions and watered the same. The plant is in gorgeous health and thriving. Every time it blooms I get bud blast, so likely from the helpful advice I've received... it may just be a touchy variety. Wish I knew the name of it. Thank you everyone for your help. |
