Does anyone have this and has got it to bloom ? I have one that is doing very well in terms of growth and growing buds, but no blooms. The first bud appeared probably 4 months ago, then another....and another. Looks like more are going to grow too. How do I get it to bloom ? Cultivation tips say that this should be grown at 58-66f overnight. I haven't. Do I move it into cooler conditions now to trigger blooming ?
---------- Post added at 08:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:00 AM ---------- I found this Dendrobium okinawense Hatusima & Ida (Orchidaceae): A Download - Dendrobium that at least says blooming is March to April. Maybe mine will bloom.... |
Mine flowered last year, but it doesn't quite fit the original description of this species:
https://www.orchidsforum.com/threads...nawense.14547/ Mine is from LOC. Their photo looks like a real one, but the lip of mine is slightly different. I'd like to see the photo of the lip (the hairy area) when yours flower. I'm not sure what this species uses for the flowering cue, but mine flowers sporadically. It is in 85/65F, and no cold period. |
hmmm...mine is also from LOC. I will get around to posting a photo but at first glance the stems on mine seem much thinner than yours, but my plant is smaller too. Mine's in a sphag basket.

Hmmm... I saw one at our society meeting but didn't buy it (yet)
I thought I can't provide the winter maximum it needs. The guy who sold it has it in the cold house with temps in the low 50ies. My temps are around 65F. Maybe I'll give it a try :-) I checked climate data and it seems there is no dry winter rest. Right ? Okinawa Klima - Wetter und Temperaturen auf Okinawa, Japan |
mine grew another growth over Summer. The 5 buds are still buds - so that's 6 months of being buds. The weather here has got into the 50's and I have left it outside to see what happens.

So how about the winter rest ?
|
I don't know. I never gave mine a winter rest and buds developed. Only problem is that the buds never bloomed and eventually all dried up. Mine is also in a sphagnum basket so dries very quickly anyway.

Thanks for your reply
Mine also dries out very quickly. It's in fine bark but with much perlite mixed in. It's under T5 right now and I'll water it from time to time. Temps are around 65-75 in my growing room I'll keep you updated. |
after being outdoors for a few months - in temps above 90f and below 50f, I've been rewarded with 2 blooms so far. Lots of buds, shriveling and otherwise....
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...09d37020b7.jpg its still outdoors, brought it in briefly for the photograph. Still in sphagnum basket. |
