pot size

OK I apologize if this has been discussed somewhere else, i was not able to locate any threads on it. How do I determine what size pot for S/H? All of my orchids are currently in 8 inch clay pots. But I know that for most of them their root mass is not taking up the whole pot. but I do not want to pull them out just to check the size of their root mass. Any suggestions?

Obviously, unpotting is the only way to know for sure.

Fortunately, many plants are foregiving of overpotting when in semi-hydroponics, so if you go with 8", but find the roots are better suited to 6", you'll probably still be OK.
