Good and bad news with my paphiopedilums
 

Ok, good news first, a green complex paph that had been free flowering without cooling requirement had stopped growing a few months ago. It had little roots left. A new growth was initiated but halted for months now. I was thinking of dumping it.
Just last week, I saw a new root and a new leaf (it's supposed to be a spike but I'm glad it is coming back to life!) coming.
The tiny new growth is still not doing anything, but at least I know the plant is active again. phew~

Next two pictures, also green complex, is working on its third new growth and two of the older growths look like they have a sheath coming out although not really obvious in the pictures here. I may be just imagining but time will tell. :)

Another complex (spotted) is growing and growing. :)

Then my all time favorite easy growing, well behaved maudiae types are having some leaf rot issues.
One alba (cheap but irreplaceable seedling alba) and one vini that I paid a lot of money for, had this small brown patch toward the tip of one leaf. I waited a few days (the pictures are a couple of days old) and the brown area is getting larger fast so I trimmed them all off.
hopefully I won't see them again. :((

The last one, also vini, super slow growing ( it has been working on one growth for almost two years now!) always had rot on the leaf. I cut three so far and with two leaves and one new leaf left, I don't want to cut away more, but those brown stuff is back on the two leaves. I'm like so freaking out because I really liked the flower on this plant. why why why!!!!! :(

White sequential blooming paph has just finished its long flowering season and is now working on a new fan.
The new fan with two leaves now are perfectly clean but the underside of all the leaves on older fans are heavily spotted. This happened quite recently. Apprently the plant does not seem to be negatively affected.
All those dark dead spots must reduce the surface area to breath. hmmm

One of alba maudiae is growing really well with 8 fans going. In this same picture, you can have a peek of my one and only phrag (Eumelia Arias) finally growing nicely.
It came with one large growth with a spike, which I killed or it terminated on its own, with four new fans of varying sizes. I got this in February. It hasn't done a thing for a long time until now.
All four of them are growing, I see the light green area elongating day by day. One of the four new fans are developing two tiny new fans at its base. yay!!!

The last picture is one of the alba maudiae having a leaf issue. but it is also working on a spike and a new baby. Do you see the baby poking above the moss?? :)
I like this kind of surprises.

They don't look too bad to me. In fact I'd say they look pretty healthy. I love those paphs with the mottled leaves. Very pretty.

When was the last time you changed your growing medium? Paphs seem to do better if repotted yearly.

The brown patch were spreading and I've seen it before, so I had to cut it off.
I really hope I don't see it return like it does on the vini in my last picture.

The poor thing lost so many leaves and it is a very slow grower too. and only one new fan so far in two years!!!

I wish paphs grew like African violet so that you can just cut a leaf and stick it in a clean sand to make a new plant. oh, well...

The second posting with spots on the underside of the leaves, I have not seen that before but the plant seems to be fine otherwise.

I have some other "issues" with mainly complex paph but I cannot capture the symptoms (subtle browning similar but different than the ones on the maudiae) in the pictures at all.

headach continues while almost all others are doing well.

I don't think it has anything to do with the worst symptoms is the one I most recently repotted.

All other paphs are sitting in not so fresh mix but vast majority of them are doing very well.

Only these three are the major headache at the moment.

I think maybe the multiflowering types are more sensitive to water (and the potting mix) since they are epiphytes?

What kind do you grow?

However, I do feel like I need to repot more often. lol

I have found my happy paph's get even happier when I repot them. Even the ones that are in the best-of-best mix.

I moved a very healthy, 19-growth spicerianum into new medium about five weeks ago, also into a clear pot. The roots are now REALLY happy, already attached to the pot, lots of new top growth - it's really come alive. The plant was fine where it was, but even better off because I repotted it (I think).

I don't actually enjoy the efforts of repotting, but I'm usually glad when I'm done and happy I did it.

Yeah, I honestly really don't enjoy repotting. especially oncidiums with so many fine roots and paphs of large size.
I don't let them go any bigger than 12 fans, which is already too much for me.
I love the show of the large specimen, but I have very limited growing space so I'd rather have more varieties than size.

My dream will be growing everything into super big size! oh, well...
