B. obavatifolium (originally thought to be Bulbophyllum restrepia)
2 Attachment(s)
My B. restrepia is blooming, not as straight as others photographed on the web but it seems to have a bit more color. One more bud is forming on another spike so I'm hoping to have both display if this one lasts that long.

Cool! I can see why it has that name, not seen this one before.

Cool looking flower

Very cool!

Cool! I can see why it has that name too. :)

That's very nice! However I don't believe its B. restrepia. That species is considerably larger than B. restrepia and has some considerable differences in the floral morphology. Also it comes from Indonesia/Irian Jaya while restrepia comes from Malaysia. Nonetheless an awesome species!

You know what, Zach...
I looked at the photo again, and I think you're right! The true Bulbophyllum restrepia, does not have the "synsepaline tail", (I'm not even sure if this is an actual term to describe what I see in the picture), but the Bulbophyllum in this pic has it. It almost looks like it could be a natural hybrid between Bulbophyllum restrepia and Bulbophyllum contortiseplaum. Or it could be a whole different species altogether, but be closely related to Bulb. restrepia. Hmmm....interesting... :hmm |
Zach is definitely correct in my opinion that this isn't Bulbo. restrepia, but with that said, I like this one a lot more than the B. restrepias I've seen in the past.

Thanks for the input. When first comparing the flower against "restrepia" images I too thought it was reminiscent of B. contortisepalum. The second flower will be opening soon and so far has no / little spiraling at the bottom. I will post a picture once bloomed.
In regard to flower size it measures 2.5" long, IOSPE states the flowers for restrepia are 2.4" long. |
I think this one might be B. obavatifolium
