Anyone growing encyclia cochleata in s/h?
 

I have a cochleata that I would like to transfer over since it is sprouting loads of new roots from its newest pbulb. I really like this plant and don't want to kill it. Opinions?

I have one in S/H. I got it as a single pbulb baby last fall. It now has a lot of root growth plus 3 new pbulbs.

zoi2 new pbulbs are very exciting! That means mine will do the same!!

stefpix, seems like encylcias in general seem to like s/h.

I will transfer it over today. This is one of my favorite orchids because the blooms look just like an octopus. Too bad there isn't a fragrance to go with it....

I have one in S/H. It did really well until I tried transferring it to a larger S/H pot when all the lovely roots it had grown into the lecca died off.

I would advise going with a big-ish pot first as the roots can grow quickly and disturbing them to re-pot seemed to make it sulk. Ray always says you can go bigger on the pot for S/H so that should be fine. Also if you do repot try and leave the existing lecca in the mesh of roots that probably surround it by that point, and just add more on the outside.

I left mine almost dry until the new PB started putting out roots. It was a non blooming size from ecuagenera. It came with almost no viable roots. now seems ok, but it is not established yet. some roots are going down in the leca. I used an ice coffee solo cup. the roots more on the surface seems to dry up, the ones covered by leca seem happier. On the other hand cochleata is not an Encyclia but a Prostechea.

I have a 3 pb division of Prostechea boothiana in a tiny clay pot with coconut husk fiber and seems happy, putting out roots there since I got it.

stefpix, the label that came with it said encyclia, was it mislabeled or did they change the name? Thank you for the correction.

rosie, if I have to pot it up I will disturb the roots as little as possible, thanks for the heads up.

It is now sitting in its new s/h home. I wish it would bloom again. They are just so cute.

I know this is an old post BUT I found it is a Google search. Any updates on Encyclia Cordigera in S/H? I have one that is sending out new roots from a new Bulb. I just made the switch to S/H but I am scared. I really like this plants.
