Oh, shoot. A new Phal Noid...

Yup, I had forbidden myself from buying any other Phal other than equestris 'Orange' so how on earth did my humble collection suddenly increase by one? And another Noid at that? :p
I went to the local florist's shop to buy bigger pots to my poor Phals that are in the middle of being re-potted, and decided to take a quick look at their orchids. Just a quick one mind you. Unfortunately, it seems as they had just refilled their stock so there were a lot more orchids than at my last visit. Among all the other Noid Phals I spotted this little darling, with its pale pink petals and warm and bright yellow parts of the mouth. It was love at first, second and third sight. Not only did I like the flowers, the rest of the Phal was in excellent shape as well with healthy looking roots, foliage and three spikes. In other words, I couldn't leave without it, thus it now stands in my living room on a private windowsill (quarantine) looking cute. |
I have a term for this - YAP. (Yet Another Phalaenopsis). A little bit like AIDS (or plant viruses!), once you have it, it can't be cured, and it will invariably express itself in the appearance of YAP in your collection. :) Of course, much like viruses, YAP also spreads amongst other people you come into contact with!
I often have to resist impulse YAP buys - I'm getting resistant to the charms of average florist/supermarket phals, but if something like that showed up... :hello |
I've definitely got YAP, that's for sure. The scary thing is that it seems to able to spread via forums or even from other people's enthusiasm. I think I've infected my friend as well 'cause since I started showing serious symptoms of YAP, her collection of orchids has increased by two and she has another one she wants to buy. I feel we need to inform the public about this rather unknown disease or people might take all the orchids we want! We have to stop it from spreading!:nailbite: I'm proud of myself for being able to walk past most Phals but this one...no, I just couldn't, the YAP-virus was too strong. :blushing: |
So cute, and with 3 spikes!
Yes, I too am susceptible to the allure of the noid Phal. When I'm super itchy for a new orchid it's hard to resist. The other day Lowe's was stocked up with extra Phals for Valentines Day, we're talking a hundred or so MORE than the large selection they usually keep stocked. Most of them were pretty standard, but I saw this one yellow one... and it was only 10 bucks. But I RESISTED!!! Mainly because I don't have anywhere to keep any full sized Phals, LOL. Otherwise my house would be loaded with big Phals. Regardless, congrats on the new cutie! |

Oh, I'm soo glad I live in Sweden. If I had walked in there I would probably have walked out with half of their Noid supply.
Well done to be able to resist! It's hard when they try to seduce you with their prettiness. My problem is that I have space... Despite the fact that my so called collection now consists of 19 Phals (with three more on the way) I still have got plenty of room for more orchids. Back to my newest edition, not only does it have three spikes, they're busy branching as well, and also, I found this (points at photo) on one of the nodes. What on earth is it? |

Very lovely blooms :D
LMAO @ the Yap concept and the I have space remark - TFF!! |
Yup, so in other words I need to fill all this space as soon as possible to able to fight YAP... Hmm... I think that could work. It will be for a good cause and everything after all. |
Yes, indeed, what is it?

ANOTHER Phal??? You mean that you didn't get enough of a fix from your 6 new ones?
I view uncontrolled orchid buying as something more akin to a drug addiction, rather than a disease. Virus doesn't give you intense cravings for orchids! I used to fall for Phals all the time, after all I live in the Noid capital of the world, where that they are absolutely everywhere and dirt cheap. |
