Phal violacea var coerulea making something....
 

So this guy is only supposed to flower in the summer, but looks like it is starting its first spike! It is a really strange shape, but Im pretty sure its a spike. This is a first blooming for it, so I am super excited to see what it looks like, although I am sure it will be a few months before that happens. Anyone have their violaceas flower in the winter?

That does look suspiciously like a spike!! :) Hopefully it'll be a very nice coerulea. A bit early, but not unheard of.

It sure looks like a spike! My Phal. Penang Girl (half violacea and half venosa) just started a spike about a week ago. Phal. venosa blooms more in late summer or fall so it seems a bit out of season for it too. But it is under lights and kept fairly warm so it may not have any idea what time of year it is!

The conditions of your home are not going to be the same as the rain forests of SE asia, so the whole "flowering season" thing is not a rule anymore. Any plant can be made to flower any time of the year given the right conditions.

Yeah, my Penang Girl also started a spike two weeks ago, and another one last week. I would say it definitely looks like a spike! Can't wait to see the blooms!!!

Some of my summer blooming phals start blooming in the springtime and continue to bloom through the summer. In order to bloom in the spring they need to be spiking during the winter months. So even though this might be a little early, it seems about right to me.

It's definitely a spike. Violaceas can take a long time to develop a spike, and they often stall. I've had one in spike for a year. Hasn't bloomed yet. :roll:
