WOW just discovered one of my chids has a incredible scent at night

B.C. star ruby xanadu which I have had a couple of years now has out did it self with blooming this year not a lot at once but constanlty for a few months and even going so far as to make a couple of lateral spikes off the main spike when the blooms faded ....another new discovery other than making lateral spikes was made last night when I decided to keep the lights on in the chids room and clean and treat with physan 20 and do some repotting ....as I worked I kept noticing a great scent as I walked by one particularly fragrant dendrobium and since I know it is scented did not pay much mind ..then suddenly it struk me that tis was not that scent but a different one and much stronger for the den you almost have to sniff a bloom usually to smell it .

HMMM what is that I wonder then I notise star ruby zanadu and remember that during the day it ocassionaly has a light scent ...so I get close and take a whiff ...wow what a nice scent and as the night went on it just kept getting stronger untill it filled the room with a great scent....

How cool is that ...I will have to either move it inside when in bloom or go out and work late more often

Your orchid is a cross between Brassavola nodosa and Cattleya batalinii. B. nodosa are famous for their night fragrance. In the wild They're pollinated at night by a type of moth I believe.

I've had several orchids that were not fragrant for one or two blooming seasons and then developed a fragrance. I don't know if it's natural or whether it was something I did. Your's sounds like a nice plant. frequent blooms and nice fragrance, you can't beat that. Enjoy.

Thanks Tucker ,It actually did not develop a lot of scent untill after 11 pm and then built up untill it was present all through the room. I had noticed it a few times during the day faintly also so I think temps might be a factor ....

Your plant sounds wonderful, do you have a picture of it?

just one sec and I will take one .......its starting to wind down a bit but it has made several primary spikes and a couple of lateral spikes off thos even ...and I did not relize a b.c. would make lateral spikes off the main just like a phal would ....

It just started 3 new leads and they will take a month or so to mature but each will bloom by march I think and it may make several more leads since it is just now getting big enough to realy gain some size and has only made one or two leads at a time the last couple of times...and lol I broke one of those off last summer ...#$##@

the color of the seaples has started getting better this round compared to previous blooms too ,they were staying a greenish dull color and now they are staring to show a yellow hue more

Unusual colors. Very pretty!

Nice color and nice surprise to discover the night scent.

The fragrance of nodosa and its hybrids is intoxicating. Love it!
