Smithsonian Orchid Collection! :)
Hello orchid lovers! :waving
So I haven't posted anything in a long time, mostly because I've been too busy with school and there just hasn't been much happening with my orchids. I have a Dendrobium kingianum and Paph. 'Macabre' blooming back home, but the pics my parents sent are too blurry to post. But I'll have plenty to post this summer!!!!!! I applied for a summer internship with the Smithsonian Horticulture Program and got one! I'll be helping to inventory their orchid collection in their new facility!!!!!! They have over 10,000 orchids!!!!! I'm going to be on :cloud9: (/udb) :chicken I am so over-the-top happy right now!!!!! :llama: |
Very cool!
|
That's awesome Evan! You're going to have so much fun, and learn so much! What degree are you working on? Did that equestris Keiki ever bloom?
|
Congratulation!
|
Thank you!
Terri, I'm working on my bachelor's. One more year left after this one! I've also been nominated by my department for Outstanding Junior in Agriculture and an early graduate school program, kind of like running start in high school. The equestris is working on a new leaf right now, only the second it's grown since you sent it to me. I tend to keep my room at 70 or cooler, so I think that slows it down. That and growing it in Pullman, WA. lol. But it's doing great, just doing it slowly. ;) |
BTW, I'm looking for housing options in DC for this summer, so if anyone lives there or knows someone there who would be willing to rent a room to me for the summer I'd really appreciate it. I'm good at yard work!

Congrats on the internship, that sounds soooo fun!! And you'll learn so much more about orchids (and you'll want to buy them all for your collection!) Can't believe I didn't know about this place when I was in DC last summer. Is the orchid collection open to the public? |
Wow, thank you Camille! I'm not sure the collection is regularly open to the public. They have exhibitions and use them to decorate other museum exhibits though.

thats awesome evan!! whats you major? hort?
|
Yep, I'm a Hort major, one of the last to come out of Washington State University unless they change again. The name of the major changed to Nursery and Greenhouse Management, which just sounds so restrictive to me. I've worked at a nursery for 5 summers, so I don't have a problem with nurseries, but that name makes it sound like that's all horticulturists can do. There's so much more out there that horticulturists influence.
