VANDA ?
 

Hi everybody,

This was labelled VANDA JVB X ASCA 'UDOM GOLD', but I feel sure that's not correct.

It was grwoing like a Vanda completely in air with naked roots and no media. The flower spike was slightly drooping with 10 flowers all with long 'tails' up to 6" long. The flowers are creamy white with greeny yellow additional petals and small spots on the darker parts.

Hi Trevor. Welcome to the OB. I don't know what that is. I sure would like to know what you have there though once you find out. Do you have any more pictures of it, like the whole plant and a closeup of on bloom?

I would guess that this is an angraecum hybrid or something from that family; just my 2 cents, but with spurs that long I doubt it's a vanda...

Angreacum or a close relative indeed.

It sure is pretty, hope you get a name, I'd would like to have one.

You're correct in assuming it's not a vandaceous plant. I think others have hit the mark with it being in the Angraecoid alliance, perhaps in the Aerangis group, given the length of the spur and the pendulous inflorescence...at least it looks pendulous to me. Angraecoids are something I know a lot about, but maybe one of our other members has a passion for them who could help. :)

In any case, it is beautiful.

Do you have a photo of the entire plant? Certainly not Vanda, I'm going through my orchid books to try to see what sort of Angraecoid it might be.

EDIT: Just saw your earlier post where you say you only have a close up.

I wonder why it was growing and flowering without any growing mediun, merely with the roots in air. The leaves are very like Vanda = several pairs of opposite leaves in a single parallel shape.

JUST COME ACROSS THIS IN RHS DICTIONARY OF GARDENING. ANGRAECUM CAUDATUM. (SEE PAGE 120 OF VOLUME 1) THE DRAWING AND DESCRIPTION LOOK TO BE EXACTLY CORRECT. IT COMES FROM SIERRA LEONE.
