Hwra. Lava Burst 'Puanani'

I have nothing else like this in my collection. It's a real mini, lots of little buds on two spikes and the red color is a real deep blood red (pics are lame). The lip is textured with a tiny waterfall like a miltonia. I can't wait for all the flowers to open. Any one here a Hwra expert? Any ideas on culture?

Hope you like it.

OH MY GOD I REALLY LOVE THIS!!!! If you don't mind me asking where did you acquire one?

jrodpad 10-19-2010 11:01 PM

I got it from the Lyman Estates orchid sale. I don't think they have a website, but you can try to google them and call to see if they have any left. If they do, I'd be happy to pick up and ship to you. PM me if you have success.

I have about 15 small ones in bloom right now... Drop me a line if you are interested. Won't be very expensive.

That' great - sounds like you're successful in caring for these guys. What are the conditions that you keep them in? Any cultural info would be helpful.

It is a hybrid that has been selected for easy culture, so it isn't too bad. Standard orchid conditions - moderate light, don't keep it too wet. I like to under-pot or use clay pots so they dry out a little faster. Fairly large mix, even on smaller plants.

It should grow in with the phalaenopsis pretty well. If you can get it a little cooler it will promote good blooming and intensify the red color. I like to take oncidium type things outside in the summer, and bring them in when it starts to threaten to frost. When they are actively growing, feed them well and keep them watered. When they aren't growing fast, cut back. If you see 'pleats' or accordion folds in the new growths, that means you didn't water enough. Too late now, but bump it up for next growing season.

I love this one too! I'll have to see what the Orchid Swap brings this Sunday then maybe some shopping! :)

I'm so excited.

Nice one J. I have one in bloom now too, must be the season. It bloomed earlier in the summer but the blooms weren't nearly as intense in color as they are now that the temps are cooler. I find mine to be an easy bloomer. It is, however, a shameless ladderer. If anyone has any hints on how to keep the bulbs down in the pot please let me know!
