Summer blooms!
 

I've been enjoying some lovely summer blooms and have a couple more yet to come so thought I'd get sharing...

It's been a busy summer so haven't had much chance to ooh and aah over everyone else's blooms, but things seem a bit quieter so hopefully will now get chance.

1. Burrageara Nelly Isler - had a rough year but lots of growth. Has some very crinkled leaves, and some that aren't crinkled at all, so not sure what I've been doing there, but very happy to see it bloom. It also has a new spike from the most crinkled of all!
2. NoID phal rescued from B&Q last summer.
3. Very young Oncidium Ornithorynchum, spiking very merrily! I love this one and can't wait to smell it when the blooms open.
4. NoID phal I bought in bloom last year although the flowers are slightly different this year with more veining around the edges...

My Phal Wiganiae and another NoID Phal also have very new spikes, so I'm looking forward to blooms hopefully all the way till Christmas, fingers crossed.

Nic,i really need some advice on this phal that i have! I should have cut it properly,but didnt,now on one spike i have leaves and roots growing at the top,it even flowered!! Right now i feel the leaves are too heavy,but im not sure whether to cut it or not??!! It has roots and everything it needs to survive,but would it be wise?? i have two more spikes coming,but at the base,and the leaves are dark shiny green!!!:roll:

That's called a keiki and is a baby plant (the name keiki comes from the hawaian word for baby).

The usual rule of thumb is that it should have 3" of root before you seperate it from the mother. That's 3" in total and from what I can see in the pics yours should be ready.

Snip the spike just above and just below the keiki and pot it up into a tiny pot. You could use a yogurt put or other small food container if you don't have small enough pots. You can also use upturned yogurt pots inside a larger pot to reduce the volume inside. Whichever you do cut plenty of holes/slits in the yogurt pot so that the medium will breath well.

I always wondered what a keikei meant!! Yes it sounds very hawaiian!! I have four others,but this one has served me well!! The first day i bought her,i went to church and fogot her for a week,but she hasnt stopped thriving once!! She deserves tender care!! Now i know who to turn to for help!! Thanks again.:)

What babies do you have?? I would love to see your variety!! Im safer with phals to begin with,dont want to get too carried away;i hate it when things die on me!!:(
