Cattleya amethystoglossa

Well, after trading this one to a friend of mine last spring, he returned it during the summer due to space considerations (although now he might want it back since it's in flower again!). This year there are seven blooms. The spike's also much taller this year, although I haven't a clue why that might be. From what I've read, C. amethystoglossa can get more than a couple dozen blooms per spike once it reaches a large size, and that would probably be quite a show. This has been an easy species to grow and bloom, but it does need a fair amount of space.

So full of life these flowers! It inspires me happiness. Seeing your Amethystoglossa I notice how slender it is.

Fantastic! A shame it is such a large species...

An example on how big the plant can be:

Steve,
That is awesome! Your amethystoglossa looks great! Don't you just love the scent too? To Mathias' point, some of the 4N plants that H&R displays at local shows are HUGE!! The canes are probably half as thick as my wrist and are a good 4ft tall!!

very nice!!!! good growing!!!

Steve, this one is one of the 4N plants that came from H&R a few years ago. I didn't realize that this species got THAT big! The scent, to my nose, is rather light. But even so, the flowers are quite eye-catching. My only complaint is that it's a wasp magnet. It's been sitting outside for the last few days, taking advantage of our warmer-than-average spring temperatures, and every time I went to water it, there were at least three or four wasps dining on the sugary deposits on the buds--and not too pleased with me interrupting them. I would really like to see a picture or two of one of the fully grown plants from H&R. If you find one, please let me know.

I never take pics at the shows, but I bet catwalker808 and hawaiiansunshine have some pics of the full grown plants. I would PM them.
