Mounting moss on walls
I'm trying to figure out how to mount moss on the back wall of my orchid case. Do you just tie it there or do you need to have something behind it to give it some nutrients? Maybe some kind of mesh that it could grow through without falling off the wall?

Having some nice wet, rather rough substrate would do well. I would say, so long as its wet, and very weak ferts in the water should be more than enough. I never mounted mine though, never had luck with that, but I did get it to grow from spore.

I believe you can also put the live moss in a blender with some spagnum and water. Pulse it up and then spray it over the substrate.
Tindomul is right, you need something rough for it to hold to, and to keep it moist until it attaches and grows. Brett |
I have taken sheet moss and tied it to an EcoWeb substrate, and I've tried a variation of Brett's suggestion, mixing a slurry of live moss and milled sphagnum with water in a blender, then painted it on.
Even though it takes longer to get established, I think the slurry method is easier. |
I've never tried the slurry method, and now I just gotta try it. But in the end, like any other plant, I am sure that it needs a moist spot to take off. And I do kinda lack those spots in my tanks.

Just wanted to show what I managed to do with a few spores and nothing else. Took a long time, but its getting there.

Folks who use EcoWeb substrates often install pumps to wet it down - with proper positioning, the web stays wet without washing the slurry off. Once it get's established, the moss itself actually helps distribute the moisture.

Wow, beautiful pics! Thanks for sharing.

I'm using the ECOWEB I got from Ray in a 10 gallon bow front I got at PetSmart. I used the slurry method and I have very nice growth after 2 months. I have a small pump that recirculates water through the ECOWEB.

Do you have air movement in there?
Would be interested in getting the details on the construction of that. |
