Catt sheaths dried up
 

I postyed this on the Cat forum but only one response.
Hi everyone. Have had a puzzling thing happen to my
Cattleya BLC Buton D'or 'Lewis' AM/AOS. I have had it for seven years and it has never left the spot it's been in during that time which is a south facing spot in a sunroom with constant humidity and varying temps. This fall it did what it has always done at that time and produced sheaths which when looked at contained buds. Then the sheaths started to dry up, which sometimes they would, but this instance they dried up and the buds dried up also. I am at a loss as to why this happened as there was no signs of any pests,no radical changes in temperature or humidity. Outside of that the plant is a picture of health with a great root system etc.

are you sure the buds dried up as well? sometimes i get dry sheaths which go on later to produce viable buds.....some plants always produce dry sheaths before blooming....other than that i havent a clue...maybe some expert will venture a suggestion....

If the sheath dries up carefully remove the top edge of the cheath with sissors and slowly and carefully peal back the sheath like a bananna peel this will usually allow the buds to form normally and allow blooming,

Thank you for making this thread because my Rhynchovola David Sander has a sheath and it looks as if it is dryngup.! Ill try what orchidingram said.

I'll answer my own question. I believe that when misting the water did not dry entirely and was getting in the sheaths which caused the buds to rot.

The Same thing happened to my Drumbeat Heritage last year the sheath started to dry up but i knew that was typical of fall/winter blooming catts

But the moistue that built up in the sheath as it dries can cause rot as i think happened in your case as in mine.

The same thing began to happen to my one of my four sheaths this winter so what i did is i sliced it in the middle to almost the top and this allowed the sheath to dry with out extra moisture and my buds are perfect!!!!!!! may be next time you could try this

Don't worry about David Sander sheath drying. This is normal. The bud will form within the dry sheath. Do not cut and peal until you see the bud!!!

I have had a Cattleya skinneri ‘Heiti Jacobs’ for about two years. Last summer it grew 2 new pseudobulbs with sheaths. The sheaths dried up last fall. About a month ago, I noticed that there were buds forming inside the sheaths. As of Sunday two buds emerged from one and five buds emerged from the other. I have been growing orchids for about 6 years or so. I love the cattleya type of orchids and have several that have never bloomed. Needless to say, I am very excited about this one.
