phal seedlings into s/h
I recently received a few bare roots phal seedlings, none with new root growth as far as I could tell, and I decided to go ahead and pot them s/h. It looks like they were previously in sphag (there were some dried bits on the roots).
Will this be okay for them? Most of the plants seem fine, but a few seem to not be taking to the constant moisture. Should I move them out into a drier medium or leave them alone to acclimate? |
I've never put a Phal in SH but I know your suppose to wait for new root growth to emerge before putting them in SH. Something to do with the old roots not being able to adjust to the moisture level and new roots being able to. I put all my phals in a mixture of 1 part LECA and 1 part sphag amd water them everyday. Their outside so they get good airflow. Good luck!

I agree that you normally should wait for new root growth, but I put some of my stressed plants that needed to grow new roots in S/H and they thrived. They needed to grow new roots, whether in s/h or in bark. I did that in summer, though, so they had some warmth and more light than this time of year.
You might want to keep them in the LECA but treat it more like bark, i.e, don't keep any (or much) in the reservoir for now, and then when they start new growth you could convert over to full s/h. You might fill up the pot, then tip it out so there is just a small amount of water, and then water more frequently as needed until they establish themselves |
IF you keep them very warm and constantly moist, they should take off in no time.
