Another new guy from Ohio
Hello all. I've been in love with Orchids forever, as my Dad used to raise them when I was a young boy way down in Florida. My Dad has long passed and I'm now 67 years old, and I have purchased potted Orchids over the years to keep around my house. But now I'd like to learn how to raise them. I'm hoping to learn a lot from the other members of this community, find out about where the good shows are so I can travel a bit (I'm now retired) to the shows. And most of all I hope that I can, with your help, learn to grow Orchids as well as my Dad did.
Thanks for letting me yak for a while, Ed Newbold Columbus, OH |
Ed, :cheer::cheer::cheer:Welcome to the OB!! I live in Pickerington and a good friend lives in Gahanna (with between 200 & 300 orchids). What suburb do you live in or are you in Columbus proper?
The Central Ohio Orchid Society just met last night. They meet once a month on the third Thursday of the month at Franklin Park Conservatory. Great bunch of people and they have a beginners' corner from 7:30 to 8:00 (It's taught by an AOS judge who really knows his stuff!!) before the meeting gets started. There is a show table every month and either freebies that somebody has just de-flasked,an auction of donated plants, or chids that a guest speaker has brought along to sell at discounted prices. The next meeting won't be until the third Thursday of November, BUT the Fall Mini-Show will be on the weekend of Nov. 7 & 8th. They have lots of good vendors, but it will not be AOS judged... I'll fix you up with details and a web site if you are interested...Meanwhile, welcome again:waving |

Hi Ed, The web site you need is coosinfo.info It will give you information on the meetings and the Fall show. We have quite a few members from Westerville--who knows, you might even run into someone you know. If you can make the November meeting, you can go as my "guest".
The November meeting is a little different in format. It is their annual Holiday Potluck.( Don't worry about bringing food--there is always more than enough!) Anyway, we pretty much just eat and chat this month--the main topic is always orchid related somehow. As usual, though, there will be a show table--and if you have a plant that is sick, the AOS judge will help you in the beginners' corner. I joined the society at the November meeting last year, and if you are so inclined they will be more than happy to add your name to the members list. The dues are $15 for an individual and $20 for families. Are you familar with Franklin Park Conservatory? If we are at the mini-show at the same time, we should meet by the giant phalaenopsis statue to just say "hi"...Hope to see you soon...:waving |
