bud blast on oncidium intergeneric

I got this NOID oncidium-ish plant at a grocery store a year ago, and it's now re-spiking. However, one of the spikes has suddenly turned red-brown and it looks like a goner to me. The other one still looks okay, but I'm getting nervous. Any ideas as to what might have caused this? What should I do to protect the other spike?

Not sure...maybe a change in environment. Stuff happens.

have you moved the plant to a new spot? sometimes that is enuf to cause blast...or maybe water standing in the fork of the leaves? i lost some of my flowers once because i moved the plant to a better spot for viewing.....i didnt think it would matter but it sure did....sorry, i hope the second spike makes it...

think positively! Most likely the other spike will be fine!
My noid milt blasted a spike earlier this summer - but has gone on to give me 6 more spikes - been in the same spot the whole time. And at the time of blasting one spike it had two others growing that bloomed fine - so idk

I'm sure other people will chime in with ideas

The plant looks healthy enough. Did you move it to another location or turn the pot after the spike formed?

seamonkey 09-20-2009 08:13 PM

No, it was in the same location since the spike started, but we did get a late heat wave... maybe the sun fried it?

Those buds still look plump. Are you sure they're blasting or could this be a precurser to orangy blooms? Do you know what color the blooms are supposed to be?

I initially hoped that was the case, but today I had another look and the buds are totally brown and withered- they're gone. :(

the sun could have fried it.. windowsill plants can easily be burnt in the fall since the sun is coming into the house at a lower angle, hitting the plant more directly than it used to be in the spring/summer.
