Stanhopea lietzei
 

This Stan lietzei completes my collection of “lietzei varieties”; another without ‘eye-spots’ (another ‘blind one’! Right, Steve?), but with ‘yellow’ hipochyle. The other three “varieties” are:

1) Completely cream-white (no special color in the hipochyle, no ‘eye-spots’)
2) Cream-white, no special color in the hipochyle, dark purple ‘eye-spots’
3) Cream-white, yellow hipochyle, dark red/brown ‘eye-spots’

Those are all very cool! I also like the fact that you have 'blind' stans and stans that must be 'near sighted' (pic 4) on account of their teeny eyes! lol As always, great growing!!!

These are gorgeous. I just received my first Stanhopea (wardii) and have a feeling, it's just the beginning of another obsession beginning with these and Gongora's. Thanks to you and others, I've received great advice to get started. Maybe someday, I'll be posting pics like these....:pray:

I have this Stan and although it's alive it doesn't seem to be really happy.

What kind of lighting do you give yours and what is it planted in?

I guess in Florida you have an adequate climate for Stan lietzei. One error - often seen - is do not provide light enough for Stans; Catt light, or only a little bit less, is good. Phal light is not enough. I use wooden or wire baskets, filled with tree-fern fiber, or Chilean sphagnum mixed with little pieces of carcoal and/or styrofoam - bean-sized pieces). To induce blooming, Stan lietzei needs a clear dry period in the fall/winter (but "dry" in terms of Stans! Do not stop to mist every another day, and instead of watering one or two times a week, water only one or two times a month. Don't fertilize in this period). In the spring/summer period, lots of water and fertilizer (I use both organic - 'bokashi' - and low nitrogen Peters, 10-30-20). But I confess, though Stan lietzei is a Brazilian plant, it's much more easy to grow and bloom foreign Stans, even here! Good luck!

I have mine in a basket with Epiweb and added a little sphag on top of it, I give it pretty high light and I am giving it a semi-rest for winter.

Maybe I'm just being impatient :tapfoot:

Stans in general are not demanding in terms of medium. You can use the same (good!) medium for all Stans with no problems. But they are demanding in terms of humidity and watering! Unfortunately, Stan wardii (together with lietzei) are amongst the more demanding, 'cause both need a relatively dry winter period. I think you will handle this very well. Dend light is OK for a great number of Stans (for lietzei, a little bit more is better).
