My sister-in-law makes a really nice fruitcake, but it's a little too sweet for me. It's a favorite of my hubbys. However, soaked in booze is always worth a little sliver or so. :coverlaugh:

I'll take seconds on the booze and skip the fruitcake. Something with that much fruit shouldn't even be allowed to be called cake! Just my humble opinion.

Well I know what it is, but have never tried it out of fear of all the jokes I hear about fruit cake...lol.

the top layer of my grandmother's wedding cake was a fruitcake. she poured brandy over it once a month to preserve it, and had some for her 25th anniversary.

If you make your own
There is a chance that it will be edible. Forget the stuff in the tin. Just use it as a doorstop, because that is all it is good for, IMO. The citron they put in that is totally inedible. :help When you make it with just plain fruit and nuts, it is actually very good.

good fruitcake is a labor of love...there is just enuf cake in it to glue the fruit together, and it is slathered in brandy....but is it ever good! you got to have a sweet tooth to appreciate good fruitcake...

We actually sell quite a bit of fruitcake at my bakery. We make two kinds of fruitcake. One is made with six kinds of dried fruit and I love it, the other is made with candied cherries and candied pineapple. It's too sweet for my tastes. None of them have citron which I find to be terribly bitter and tastes nasty.

I love fruit cake. My mother-in-law makes a good one with brandy, but my aunt makes an even better one with no brandy but really really soft texture. She usually gives us one for christmas so fingers crossed.:crossfing
