Lc. Koolau Seagulls AM/AOS,rotten spike
Just got this new plant, owner was aware and gave me a refund. I would like to know what to do to save rest of the plant. Rest of plant appears good, It does need repotting, its growing over side of pot.The spike is rotten down inside. I removed the loose leaves, but the spike needs to be cut off? Please advise. Thanks:hmm

Really need a picture to see what the problem is. If the flower spike alone is damaged it just needs to be cut off. If you mean that part of the growth is rotten, it should probably be removed with a sterile blade, either the whole growth or below the rotten area and then dusted with a fungicide (cinnamon, perhaps). I'd wait to repot it until it starts sending out new roots.

Hi, Ron. Yes its just the very end of the sheath, if thats what its called. Rest of the plant seems fine. It has 2 other new growths, One is 1 in. the other is 7 in. They appear fine. I am going to repot it tomorrow. Any suggestions on what medium is best. I have several mixtures? I will cut and treat plant at that time. Thanks, Pam

It sounds to me like you might even save the flowers if only the end of the sheath is affected. Just cut off the bad part. As to the best medium, my recomendation would be to use whatever is working for you with similar plants. Then you don't have to give it special treatment. Just about anything works as they say (though I haven't heard it for a while): "You can plant them in blue marbles if you fertilize."
