Sides of terrarium covered?
Hi everyone. I was wondering if it was a good/bad idea to also put some coco panels on the sides of the terrarium to increase surface area for hanging mounts. I was thinking of only covering 2/3 of the entire side walls so it wouldn't look too cramped and you can still see in from the side as well. Has anyone done this or think it'll be a bad idea? All the light will come from the top canopy since I don't have much natural light in that room. Thanks.

If the light is coming from the top canopy, I don't think it would be a problem. My lighting comes from above as well in my orchidarium and I have orchids hanging all over the sides, but I used the green mesh wiring stuff instead of coco panels.

I use that on the back of mine. I would also on the sides, except that's where the doors are. Mine is rather large, so I need two doors. It does tend to get moldy after a while, so a spray with Physan 20 and that clears it up for 6 months or more. http://www.orchidboard.com/community...bs/DSC2676.jpg

Ross, I had no idea that it would get moldy. I saw that in your tank you have a Neo as well. How does that do in the terrarium? I am planning to put one in mine but am worried it won't get a winter rest and cold enough temps to bloom. I've had it for 2 years and haven't seen a single flower!
Ramon, unfortunately, I bought this large sheet of coco background with some other supplies from Reptile-food.ch Shop, Switzerland`s Reptile Specialists*-*Home along with my pump. I thought I'd use it as background for the sides and for mounting orchids onto the existing panes to make it match a bit more. Does this break down fast and is it good to be used for mounting? I don't know if I can return that piece and if I do, then I'd have to make another order for Epiweb and wait for that to come in! |
wow! Lily, that's a cool website :) Thanks for posting it.. I did not know it.... I will safe it forthe time I start working with my vivarium :)

I agree, but it's black, not cocoa colored. Didn't know if esthetics was an issue.

Well, I would love to get it but I don't want to go thru the hassle of returning something and then ordering something else. I hope that the air flow will keep the mold down. Is coco background a good enough material to mount on? How long does it take to break down?

Mine's been in the tank under constant misting and moisture (5 seconds misting every 4 hours - for 2 years or so) and is doing quite well. Yes it will work just fine for you. Just clip the hangers of the mounts into the fiber. Slick as that! By the way, I used silicone sealant in a tube squirted all over the back, then pushed the mat into the sealant. I used weights to hold it down till the sealant dried.
