Dracaena fragrans in bloom
This plant has been in my home for 25 years. My parents got it as a baby plant, and actually outgrew me in rate and size. It is now approximately 10 feet tall and it has never ever bloomed. UNTIL NOW!! I only first read about it being possible to bloom this about two years ago, and yesterday I was astonished to discover a developing inflorescence on it. WOW! The buds have not opened yet, but as soon as they do I will take pics. By all accounts this is supposed to be beautifully fragrant.
By the way, I have my P. equestris mounted on this one. Its a good house plant. Sorry for the quality, I still cant manage to learn how to properly focus my subject. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...4/DSCN3447.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...4/DSCN3448.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a2...a_fragrans.jpg |
thats amazing tindo.
i had one for many years and just got tired og it just reaching for the ceiling and nothing else. i did not know they bloomed. i have draceana dragons blood; do you know if they bloom? |
It should as it is a flowering plant. I really don't know about how hard it is to get it to flower, and some flowering plants seem to have lost the ability to do so and depend on vegetative reproduction instead. But chances are it will bloom.

Way to go, Tin!
I got sick of looking at mine and dumped it a few months ago...only found out very recently that they bloom! Who knew? :faint: |
0h no!! So many people throwing their corn plants out! What a bummer Sue. Oh well, now you know. I will post as soon as the buds open. I really hope its fragrant as they say.

Wonderful tropical, Tindo. Can't wait to see the blooms open.

OK! I walked into the apartment today and immediatley I was like, does it smell like flowers to you? (talking to my fiancee here). And then 5 mins later I remembered plant, and sure enough in bloom!! It smells like a mix of roses and and strong french soap. hehe. I can't really pin point it. And the fragrance is strong, throughout the apartment, and the windows were open all day long! Windy day too.

Oh Tindo, that is incredible! You have to have won some award for the person with the most patience! Unbelieveable. Beautiful blooms, too! :)

congratulations.
looks like it is going to bloom for a while. |
Dracaena are members of the lily family. Most have white flowers.
We use many species and cultivars in interiorscaping. The D. fragrans, D. massangeana and D. deremensis 'Janet Craig' are the most common ones to flower in indoor situations. I always cut the blooms. They are a mealy bug magnet and many in my accounts find the scent overwhelming. |
