Amazing eBay Cattleya Cosmic Future. Absolutely gutted I missed it.

Someone was selling this on eBay. Was planning to bid to win and I thought it ended today but turned out it did so yesterday. Went for a song in my opinion, too.
Not sure I’ll ever come across something this nice again. Photo is of exact bloom. Was tempted to ask seller to send my info to the buyer in case they want to sell me a division in the future, but I think that might cross the line. |
The seller may have been Carlos from Sunset Valley Orchids. Do you remember if the seller was OrchidGeek? Anyway, I would bet the seedling is a SVO hybrid. I suggest emailing the photo to SVO and ask them. Because seedlings are one of a kind you may not be able to get the exact look, but you may be able to get something very similar, maybe even better. I am flowering out seedlings from a SVO flask that I bought two years ago and the majority of the siblings look so similar (cookie cutter flowers I call them) one might think they are mericlones. If the cross number was visible in a photo, or if the parents of the hybrid were listed you have even more of a head start in your search.
There are a few eBay sellers that list cherry picked first bloom seedlings from SVO. Fred is a fantastic hybridizer, and if you dig into some of the hybrids he has produced recently, you will see a lot of gorgeous mini catts. Enough to probably make you forget about that particular flower. His crosses throw an almost freakish number of quality flowers. Maybe why I started buying flasks so I can bloom about fifty from each cross! Good luck! |
Sorry you missed it - But I think in the orchid world there are plenty of opportunities to 'fall in love' again

Thank you for your reply. You are correct that this was an SVO hybrid. Unfortunately for me, Cosmic Future is probably one of the most variable crosses Fred has. I do also follow the Orchidgeek page, but this one wasn’t from there. I did actually find out who it belongs to, but they do not have any divisions and sold the whole plant. I have a thing for purple anther caps on red flowers. |
Fred is really nice. Just write him and ask if any of the other crosses/seedlings have this trait (I would send him the picture to remind him of exactly what you mean). He may have one with those traits that is similar or he might do another round if he knows you are interested. He might even offer you a better seedling (vendors often keep a few of the better ones for a while longer before making the final choices....). As long as a customer is friendly and respectful, vendors are usually happy to help.
