Favorite Smellers That Don't Fill A Room

I like orchids that smell, but I hate it when the smell is so powerful that it fills a room. I find this nauseating. I prefer orchids that to smell them you need to stick your nose in it.

In keeping with that, Can you recommend your favorite smelling orchid that doesn't fill a room? Or interesting smelling orchids that don't fill the room.

First, welcome!
I don't find most orchids all that strong-smelling. And even some of the Cattleyas that are super-fragrant, are only like that for some part of the day (like morning or afternoon, when they get warm) That "timing" of fragrance is intriguing. For species, it indicates when the pollinator is going to be active. Some are fragrant in the morning, others (especially white and green ones) may be fragrant only in the evening. (Brassavola nodosa is "La dama de la noche")

Oncidium Twinkle...they have a nice fragrance but you have to get close to smell it. Angraecum distichum and Haraella rectrocalla/odorata are two miniatures that smell very nice.

I have Dendrobium Lichenastrum Var. Prenticei and Dendrobiium Lichenastrum...one smells nice and the other does not but I am not sure which is which so....

I like the ones that perfume and entire room and I am finding that more and more of the formerly very fragrant orchids (species) that once perfumed a room have been bred for larger/fuller flowers and no longer have a strong scent or any scent at all.

When my Dendrobium chrysotoxum is in bloom it emits a sweet,honey-ish scent that I enjoy from about 1ft. distance. And the color is bright yellow and happy.

My granddaughter's favorite orchid is Onc. Sharry Baby. Of course. She's six. Who doesn't like the smell of chocolate? About a year ago she heard my cousin call me Sherry (childhood nickname) that no one calls me anymore who hasn't known me my whole life. She told me it's really cool that I had an orchid named after me.

Brassavola perrinii and Maxillaria picta have a nice fragrance. The former only at night and the Maxillaria especially in the morning with a mimosa-like scent.

Caution: Fragrances that are pleasing to one person, could be the opposite to another, and totally unnoticeable to a third.

The first orchid society meeting I ever went to, was on fragrances. The speaker (from perfume manufacturer) brought in 50 samples of fragrances, and made the following statement:

Nobody here will be able to detect all 50, as every nose is different in what it can detect. And, what is pleasing to some, might be displeasing to others.

Thus, any advise on fragrances must be taken with a grain of salt.

That is a cool idea for an orchid meeting. :)
