Mini vacation ... mounts in tow??
My hubby and I will be spending 4 days on our boat and a few days with his father which he lives on an island in the intracoastal waterway. We will be vacationing on the water. I thought about taking my mounts so they will get sufficient care and thought of bringing my own water supply, without fert, as I am not sure of the shock these chids might endure. My main concern would be the seabreeze being salt related as the mounts will need to be placed outdoors during the day. Any additional suggestions on care would be greatly appreciated? Or any suggestions on keeping them at home with enough water supply for 5 days. I am an indoor grower.

I'd leave them at home... Unless they are cloud forest orchids (some impossible to grow pleurothallid species, for example), they will be ok.
Water them well before you leave, let the leaves dry, and place them well away from the windows. Or, if you are spectacularly worried, get a big rubbermaid or tupperware box (a sweater box or the like), put about an inch of moist spagnum on the bottom, and lay your plants on that. You can even close the lid. If they are tolumnias, encyclias, or epidendrums, chances are really good they won't even notice you are gone. Lots of other mounted things take drying well too. |
Excellent suggestion, I will most definitely water them well and have a place to put them away from the window, tell them good bye and I will be on my way. With longer durations I will do the rubbermaid and spag. Thanks bunches, and will take the trip in ease...

Thanks Rob, they did very well while I was out of town. My first with mounts guess I have a bit to learn.
