Damaged Orchid: Will my Cattleya Recover?
3 Attachment(s)
Good Afternoon,
I have a Cattleya Frances Fox that recently was involved in an accident. My sibling accidentally let the cat into my plant room and she decided to gnaw on the leaf tips, including that of a new growth. I have since performed surgery and removed the damaged material. I have included pictures. In your personal opinion what are the best next steps? Do you think it will keep the new growth, and is the plant salvageable? Thank you for the help in advance. I am not new to orchids and have a decent collection, but this is my first Cattleya so I am unsure of its hardiness. (The pseudobulbs are wrinkled due to just getting through shipping) |
From the look of that plant - in its current state ----- I don't think it needs to recover or needs to be salvaged.
It looks hardly damaged at all. The recent incident is probably equivalent to a minor scratch. This orchid will be just fine. |
Thank you, I greatly appreciate the quick response. Looking back I realize I may have overacted, but I really care about my collection. Hopefully it heals up well. My main concern was how it would affect the new growth and if it would continue to grow properly.

Most welcome! If the new growth leaves are fairly large - and the tips are just removed or chewed a bit, then the leaf can certainly keep growing if it hasn't reached its potential size yet.
This orchid will generally have other growth points along the rhizome region - so if suitable care is maintained, then it will even sprout new growths in the future. |
Welcome to the Orchid Board!
That is minimal damage. It will continue to grow well, and might still flower on that growth. Depending on plant size, Cattleyas may survive the complete loss of 1 or even 2 complete sets of new growth. But don't do this on a regular basis. |
That is a minorly inconvenienced plant, not a badly injured plant. Nothing to worry about.
