I think I made an awesome trade...

It made a flower and more spikes are on the way.

It has got me giddy and very pleased with myself... :waving:evil:

Came from an established colony off a big mango tree in Florida...

However, i do not know what it is or how to continue this good fortune?

Can someone ID and offer advice?

Thanks! (/udb)

It's a Cattleya alliance hybrid. Grow it like other Cattleyas. It looks a little like Guarianthe xguatemalensis, a natural hybrid,

Thanks!

This was growing with an established cluster bare-root on a mango tree.

So, maybe i should put it on a tree?

Where do you live? How far from you was it growing?

... oh and, yes, BTW. This is looking a lot like the other google images of Guarianthe xguatemalensis!

how cool.

I live in Miami, FL.

My neighbor traded with me and he lives a few streets away from me.

I don't have a mango tree but I have a black olive that has a sort of similar trunk with rough bark...

Although, i could try to grow it on purchased orchid bark.

I am trying a new method with some of my other orchids. I have not injured any of my plants yet...

I use chicken wire to create a little box and fill that with orchid medium and attach the plant to the box with a zip tie or other things.... :hmm

I will take a photo of my most recent set up and post at once!

You could put it on any tree with similar light to what it had. Tie it firmly so it doesn't wobble the first year while it's attaching itself. People use old pantyhose or polyester knitting yarn.
