I keep using the pretext that "oh but it's your birthday, treat yourself"

BUT THAT ISN'T FOR ANOTHER THREE WEEKS!

Someone talk some reason into me.

Before my partner leaves me and you have to dig me out from under the tiny orchids.

Nah, you're on your own. You're doing the right thing anyway, collecting mini's. You can keep thousands in a NYC apartment if you do it right.
Look at it this way; if you were trying to collect large specimen plants you would have already reached the point where you'd be scheming how to approach the landlord to let you build a 60' x 40' greenhouse up on the roof so look how much money you're saving by going with the mini's! :D

Hahahaha that is such good advice. And true.

I think most of us resort to miniatures when we run out of space and considering how little care they need compared to a big plant that drinks over a liter a month and the little space they take up you won't find anyone here to persuade you otherwise.

I have seen some really destructive relationships and a hobby like orchids can be an annoyance but it can always be worse than orchids, you should be pointing out if you don't grow orchids you will be more stressed, there will be less sex, the place will get messier, more housework for him, he will soon buy you more himself.

I'm afraid I can't help you, I'm stuck under my pile of minis!

Just be certain to get home first, unpack the orchids and quickly dispose of all the evidence. Mini orchids are easier to hide among the other plants/orchids. :)

Natalie, as much as we love you here, I don't think you're going to find the help you're hoping for. For every orchid you or anyone else here buys, we all get a big jolt of vicarious pleasure. That's hard to give up.

Use your best coping tools. Sneak them in the door like Leafmite says. Minimize this with you partner. "A least it's not a dog." Manipulate your partner. "I know you want me to be happy because you love me sooo much."

Love yourself, love your orchids.

If you do find a 12-step program for this, let me know. I bought two orchid from bed last night at 1am, trying not to shine the cell phone in my sleeping husband's eyes.

I was pretty good at this tactic, then covid started and my boyfriend works from home while I don't. Sneaking orchids into the house has gotten impossible! The new tactic I will soon test is to order only mini's so that the box is as small a possible, and then when questioned, vaguely answer that I bought "a few" orchids.
