Subrosa and anyone else re Tolumnia...
Subrosa, I recently read you grow Tolumnia well in SH. Thought it was here, but maybe elsewhere as I can't find it now.
Would you please show some pictures of Tolumnia in your SH setup? Some of mine do well, some don't. I've tried sticking them into the LECA several different ways with variation. Anyone else who successfully grows Tolumnia in SH, I would also welcome your pictures. |

Sure thing! This is my one and only Tolumnia, so I certainly don't claim any expertise with them! But the plant was very rough when I got it as an extra in a trade, one of those "I'm going to kill this if I keep it any longer, so you give it a try" deals. I keep it on a sunny south facing window during the winter, and once night time temps stay above about 50°F I move it outside and acclimate it to the sunniest spot in my yard. I water it regularly with no intentional drying out, but occasionally life gets in the way and it will get dry for a couple days. I fertilize it normally, and that's about it. I find it a pretty easy and forgiving plant.

I've got nothing of value to add - just needed to say how much I LOVE this watering can / teapot look-a-like! That's the cutest pot I've ever seen

Ya know Subrosa, I forgot about this. And now I remember. Gracias! And actually remember the picture of this cute little Tolumnia teapot from a ways back... remember remarking on it. Not sure if it was on this board or somewhere else.
SO, when you put this Tol in SH, did you bury the roots down in the LECA, or lay it on top and wait for roots to go down? Or even remember at this point... I get so concerned about letting the roots dry out, that with most I laid them on top. The two that I actually buried the roots in the LECA are doing well. The rest continue to struggle. Having an uprising of scale on them this winter that I didn't notice right away sure didn't help matters. Several didn't recover from the cure and I'll likely toss them... too far gone to mess with. Ugh. I love these little Tolumnia, but they sure don't care much for me. |

Gracias for the info Subrosa. I will find a healthy new victim to practice on, along with the other two that are doing fine. Not gonna attempt it with the "descaled" ones... they're in the ICU right now.
