These flowers are in bloom right now, from a plant that I bought only yesterday from an orchid sales event. The colours are quite nice when the illumination is good. Darker burgandy dark-reddish chocolatey colours when surrounding illumination is less.

The tag says Jewel Red, so I'm trusting it's the correct order --- not Red Jewel heheh.

Nice red. It looks very sparkly which is nice.

Thanks for your nice comments about this flower paphL and GT! I'll share with you nice pics in the future of other different orchid flowers in this section.

I just have to reply to this very interesting observation! A moment ago --- I did a search to see what 'shinzu' might mean. And the google search came up with the word is japanese, meaning 'pearly'. Your observation about that is amazing! I can see what you mean about sparkly!

This was the very first phonepic of this nice orchid when I bought it on the recent weekend. Under lower light (lower level illumination) conditions, it goes low-profile - with a dark red-brown chocolate colour.

Very interestingly --- the Grex - Jewel Red - doesn't show up in the RHS orchid register. Might have to do some searching for the origins of this one.

Very nice shade of red. Looks nice and compact!

I'm not sure if "shinzu" means pearl, since pearl is "shinju" or "pa-ru" in Japanese... but pretty nonetheless.

Very nice red!! That and the flwer shape remind me strongly of some of its much smaller Sophronitis cousins.

I agree with you Jeff. I just did a double-check on the word, and it is 'shinJu' that has the meaning of 'pearl' in Japanese. And now ----- I don't have any idea at all what 'shinZu' means, unless whoever named this plant made a typo haha.

There's a case of some catt-type orchids that was linked to a name of Caudebec, and then somebody made a mistake in registering one called C. CaudAbec Candy. So now ----- it's sort of like permanently stuck as a permanent blooper in orchid history hahaha.

This C. Jewel Red 'Shinzu' is a little bit of a mystery right now, as I was asking around - and an orchid importer told me that he doesn't know the origins of Jewel Red. I tried my luck with a search on the RHS orchid register site. No hits! Thanks Jeff. Thanks for letting me know that you spotted the important difference --- the 'z' and 'j' letters!!!

I'm getting curious about this name thing now. I'll have a look in Orchidwiz this evening, even though my version of the software is massively out of date!

No problem - it just caught my eye since I'm a native Japanese speaker. It may be a typo or it could be a different language (perhaps Mandarin?). Whatever the name/origin of this, I like it
