Background info on Tolumnia Jairak
Hello all,
I see many tolumnia breeds nowadays with the name "Jairak" in it; Jairak Flyer, Jairak Rainbow, Jairak Firm. I was just curious, does anyone know where this name came from? Looking for some history on this! |
Somewhere around here was a thread on naming convention.
I found three registered and they all have the same registrant/originator. Often, hybridizers use the same name to signify themselves without calling the plants "John Doe". Edit to add: growers do similar for award winners. |
So more or less, the name Jairak could be the hybridizers "pen name"?
|
All of the Jairak plants (and there are about 100 registered across several species) are produced by Suanjairak Orchid Farm in Thailand. Hence the Jairak name.

"After the meeting, Darryl told me Oncidiums are relatively unstable in mericloning, and meristems for propagation should only be taken from divisions of the original plant, not from mericlones. He said the Thai firm Jairak is careful about this, so their mericloned plants cost a little more. He buys from Jairak. Other Thai firms mericlone the plants they buy from Jairak, then mericlone those mericlones, then mericlone those mericlones... and sell them into worldwide commerce. Very quickly the mericlones mutate into things that look completely different. He said Tolumnia Snow White has become the poster child for this: It is supposed to be white, but a great many mericlones sold as Snow White bloom pink."
For some reason I can't post the working link. It's in the Oncidium forum under Darryl Venerables Sunset Valley etc. |
