These opened today. There were more buds at the top but they grew too close to the lights and blasted.

That is a pretty flower. Does it have a fragrance?

Growing under lights does have that hazard, doesn't it? I have lost blooms because of the lights, too, especially when I grew the large Cattleyas. Some of my other plants will grow into the lights and have their top leaves burned.

Congrats!

Oh those blooms are so pretty - I love the shape and colours of them. Shame the others blasted.

No discernable scent. This seems to be a pattern for me. I buy fragrant orchids that aren't.

Maybe I should send you the Bulbophyllum carunculatum seedling and we could test that theory. It is one of Edgar Stehli's selfings.... The parent has the ability to 'perfume' his entire greenhouse. :0

Emphasis on 'fume'?

Like you, I have been disappointed with many 'fragrant' orchids. It is always disappointing when one grows a seedling for four or five years and then...no fragrance, even after a few blooming cycles. I have a bunch of seedlings that 'should' be fragrant. We shall see.

'Fume' is what my family will do when it blooms....

The only one I have that has scent is my Encyclia radiata (now named something I can't spell) that smells like cat pee. Every time I come in the front door, I think I need to clean Nathan's box. This year it has 5 or 6 beautiful, smelly spikes.

Ugh. I think I had one of them once and gave it away not long after it bloomed. My Cinnamon zeylanicum has an unpleasant odor when it blooms so I quickly learned to remove the flower buds. With orchids, though, the blooms are usually the entire point!

Fortunately, I have other plants with nicely fragrant flowers. One of my favorite plants for fragrance is Jasmine sambac 'Maid of Orleans' which is always in bloom and smells wonderful. It is really, really easy to grow and can be kept small (I grow it in a six inch pot). I am always surprised everyone doesn't have one in their plant collection. :)

I got an ollie palmer recently. It got a bit scorched by the sun, so the leaves have some nasty scars, but they will eventually grow out after a few years. I like this plant. Getting the light requirement right is a bit hard.
