Two Tolumnia from Hausermann's arrived

After a bit of a delay, order arrived today! So happy! I have a Tolumnia jairak flyer "fantastic " and a Tolumnia red berry miniature. These are nice size plants and look very healthy. They both have old flower spikes on them, should I cut those off? The red berry miniature's spike is still green, the jairak flyer's is brown and crispy.

I plan on mounting these. Here are pictures tho probably sideways:/ what's up with that? I didn't used to have that problem.

Beautiful plant!

Leave the spikes. it's hard to tell if they are really dead. They can rebloom from old spikes, and also make new plants - which you can trade.

They do great in high light and plenty of air circulation. They like frequent watering but need to dry out completely between waterings. If the leaves start getting tiny wrinkles, that means not enough water. I soak mine for 6-12 hours every week or so if I see wrinkles. My humidity can be pretty low.

Hmmm I posted the Red Barry picture, now it's gone. Weird. I'll try another pic....sideways.

Estacion seca, thank you they are nice healthy plants. I think mounting them will be best. I have a Tolumnia sylvertris 'El Gato' mounted on a wine cork and it grows very well. It is so tiny but a fun little Tolumnia!

They look great.

Pattywack 05-14-2016 09:04 PM

Thank you Wintergirl, I thought they looked very nice. I've not ordered from Hausermann's before and I guess they kind of lost my order? I emailed them and they sent them FedEx fast so I'm happy.

They are very nice little plants. Hausermanns was my first mail order. and I still have all my orchids, I haven't killed any yet!!! I want to make another but I'm trying to stop myself.

Pattywack 05-15-2016 01:11 PM

Trying to stop? Now why would you do that, it's spring after all. I'm so tired of planting outside in our beds, constantly weeding, mulching, watering, trimming...blah I'm too old for that anymore and orchids are way more fun. Lol

Offer to teach neighborhood kids how to garden. Tell them you won't charge them a dime.

Tolumnia might be my Favorite orchid. I have 3 and all are in spike right now I am so happy. Lots of high light and let them go just about totally dry before you water and they will be happy.

Because I get nothing else done. I need to find an easier way to water them :_( I do hear ya on the weeding of the flower beds. The worst is the grass :((

Congrats pattywack! I love tolumnias very much... and these look wonderfully healthy... another quick note, they really love heat... don't seem to do much when it's below 60 really...

a little story, I had a keiki fall off a plant i got a few months ago, i soaked it then put it somewhere i couldn't remember... a couple weeks or more later i found it and it was still green! These guys can handle dry spells, pretty incredible for an orchid... course it didn't look good, but it's alive and now more green...

Snowflake311, how are you growing yours up there? inside? or you have them outside? I imagine it would be a bit coolish up there most of year...

Pattywack 05-16-2016 03:44 PM

u bada I think they look great too, very healthy and they have both recently bloomed. Sorry I missed that. I plan to mount them maybe together and if it ever warms up and stops raining I want to put them outside. This has been an awfully wet spring this year.

Glad you found your keiki and its doing well. These are tough guys just need the correct conditions. I really like them too.

This is a really old thread. As far as I know, Orchids by Hausermann is very much alive, maybe moved from the old post. This is the current link to their site.
Orchids By Hausermann: Storefront
and they do have Tolumnias

I read further. They have just suspended shipping because of weather. Thanks Roberta. I like this website and when it is warmer I will probably order from them. I am excited to learn about tolumnias.
