Red orchids?
Hello! I find a page online that sells orchids (whole saler), but there's no specific pics of each plant, there's pics of the common ones, but the price list is huge!
I have to buy one whole box, so I plan to gift some. My grandmother always wanted a red orchid, which ones are a good option for inside of the house? She has a few I haven't ID I was hoping for ones that would be happy on growing conditions similar to the Phalaenopsis. Outside she grows Oncidium. But I know she wants the red one indoors. Thanks! |

I have a really pretty red cattleya that I recently purchased. It's a "Slc. Hsiang Yu Red Pearl, 'red dragonfly'". Maybe something like that would be up your alley?
They do need a lot more light than phalaenopsis, though. |
There are Phalaenopsis hybrids that have flowers very close to red.
Most of the red Cattleya and Oncidium alliance plants need more light than a Phalaenopsis. Some people can flower red Miltoniopsis hybrids in lower light, but these plants don't like higher temperatures. What are the temperatures like in your grandmother's house? There are a few red Phragmipedium hybrids that take less light than Cattleyas. |
Thanks for the replies!
That Cattleya looks beautiful! Her house is sighly warmer because it has more light, but she doesn't have anything to measure it, I could take my digital thing to test it. |
If you can keep Miltoniopsis hybrids below about 29C / 85F during the day, and keep them cooler at night, they should grow very well. Many are bright red and fragrant. When they are happy they grow very vigorously.

Gongora rufescens gives me a flock of little red dragons when it blooms. Plus they smell nice!
|
Bulbophyllums?
|
There are MANY red Phragmipedium hybrids descended from Phragmipedium besseae. They need just a bit more light than most Phals. Large well grown plants can be in almost constant bloom.
|
Slc.Jewel Box 'Dark Waters' is a great one to start!
|
Burrageara (Oncidopsis) Nelly Isler which is in the Oncidium family but is not real large is a true red. It could grow on a window sill.
|
If she likes "wine red" like a burgundy, then maybe a paphiopedalum vinicolor. They have vinicolor Maudia types that will not break the bank, and are big and gorgeous. They also 100% like phal like lighting.

You can also try Maxillaria tenuifolia, with its lovely coconut-like scent too.

I don't know- you've mentioned she grows Phalaenopsis successfully indoors, and there are some lovely red Phals out there. Some even have a bonus fragrance. So why mess with what works? I'd get a couple red Phals for her- and I bet if you go to the Phal subforum and ask, you can get some suggestions on hybrids to look for. Or look on eBay just to get names, or Google 'red phalaenopsis'.
Paphiopedilums should work for someone who succeeds with Phals, but they look more purple to me. There are great red Oncidiums, but you said she grows them outside. This makes me think that Cattleyas would work best for her outside as well. (if she has some frequently blooming red Onc outside, for instance, she could bring it in when it's blooming if the Phals aren't blooming then and take it back out when it's done) |
Hello! I love all the suggestions! Thanks!
I think now I want them for me >///< I thought of a red Phalaenopsis before, I really think it would be easy to care for her that has already experience with those, but I also was curious to gift her a different species. Still this person doesn't have specific Phalaenopsis, just sells them like, 1 box of Phalaenopsis... But the rest of the species have names. I was looking for a Paphiopedilum, for me, and one for her would be nice if they grow happy with Phalaenopsis, but they are not on the list :l |
Phalaenopsis Sogo Grape Fireball is a wonderful deep red.
|
That's awesome, but where does one get those... Hybrids? The Cattleya mentioned before looks so gorgeous too, but the species list I have from the orchid seller seem to be only those without ID or specific species, let's say as an example Hexisea Imbricata, but I haven't find many like "Vanda Prune Flowers"
