Plant ready for S/H?

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

When I got this Psychopsis, it was in a terrible condition. Its pseudo-bulbs were badly wrinkled and most roots were rotting. However, after a couple of months of care, the newest pseudobulb has started producing roots.

I had planted it in a medium comprising of bark, coconut husk, charcoal and a little leca topped with Spaghnum moss.

Summers are soon approaching and the media is drying out too fast. I am thus wishing to transfer this plant to S/H system.

Kindly suggest as to what to do. Is it the right time? Should I do it?

In hot, dry climates like ours, the top medium of S/H pots does not stay moist very long. You can move it now, but be prepared to water often, or to spray with water often, until the roots grow down ino the S/H medium.

Hello!

So I went ahead and transferred my Psychopsis in S/H.

Now, I noticed that it has two new growths! Could one of it be a flower spike? Is it too early to tell?

Please find a photo attached.

I can't tell what that might be.

he is saying to make a little cover for the S/H that is in hot dry climates. The little cover will help Slow the evaporation and keep the top a bit more humid. So take a plastic lid and cut a hole for the plant to stick out of and problem solved. pretty cool Idea.

Click on the link. :)

Great idea, Ray. That's definitely 'orchid hack' worthy.

This is a thread about hansu.nahar's plant. I was writing that I can't tell what might be in hansu.nahar's photo of his Psychopsis in the thread above. Does anybody else have an idea of what hansu.nahar is showing on his plant?

However, I do have a doubt, please. If I cover up the top part, wouldn't it stop all air exchange in and out of the pot?

Yeah I thought you could not tell what the photo link was. Sorry.

It could be a spike but only time will tell for sure. On mine the new growth tends to look very pointed this growth on yours looks more round. So it could be. once it gets a little longer you will know better what it is. How cool any new growth is good growth to me.

Not at all. That's the reason the outside diameter is an inch smaller than inside diameter of the pot, and likewise, why the hole in the middle is larger than the plant.

Hello,

The new growth appears to be a new pseudobulb. Need second opinions though...

In anyway, I am happy that the plant has adjusted well in S/H and is growing a lot of new roots.

Looking good!

I live in East Texas, and I am also having a difficult time keeping enough water in my orchids. Most of them are in the red-brown clay balls. Of course, I do keep the humidity up in the greenhouse. The temps are in the high 90's and low 100's. Bummer! BettyE

I have to water my S/H containers at least twice a week now or the reservoirs run dry.

Ray 07-10-2016 10:18 PM

So what's wrong with that? More water = faster growth

I was pointing out that watering S/H containers can't be by the calendar.

I use moss on the top of the LECA. It looks more "natural" than a plastic lid, retains moisture and allows for evaporation.
