Hi from Kansas - The Land of Ahhhs
Nice to meet you all!
Have been lurking for a while and think it's time to introduce myself. Having had some luck with NOT killing phals and getting them to rebloom, I've been bitten with the orchid bug and want to add others to my collection.
I grow on my 2nd level screened porch spring through early fall and indoors in winter. Overhead trees provide shade on the porch and our humidity is usually fine here, though excessive heat can be a problem. A fan helps take care of that. Mostly, I have to watch for too much rainfall. It come right in on the porch.
Don't have window sills that are usable, so over-wintering on wire shelves under light in living room with a room humidifier. My orchids seem happy enough, so I think I'm doing a passable job, but looking forward to improving my skills with your help.
Currently, I've added a dendrobium aggregatum and a cymbidium SweetHeart "Spring Pearl" just to see if I can do this. The cymbidium is on it's second blooming spike so I'm thrilled so far. If I'm extremely lucky, the dend might decide to bloom in mid to late spring. I worry about giving them the cooler temps they need, but spring is almost here so will send them out to play on the porch as soon as I can.
Will be posting under the Beginner section regarding repotting the cymbidium. Look forward to any help I can get.
Oh, and my moniker, Wrknnwf, is an awkward abbreviation of "Working Newf". Newfoundland dogs are my first passion. Other than being just about my only family, we train together for obedience, water rescue, draft work and conformation shows. I do not breed them.
